Sri Lankan GSM operator Mobitel has awarded Ericsson a contract to become the sole supplier of network equipment which will be used to migrate its infrastructure from TDMA to DCS-1800 technologies. The new network will be rolled out in three phases, with initial installations planned to begin in the second quarter of 2003. Once complete the network will provide island-wide coverage, and will allow the operator to offer pre-paid services and multimedia messaging (MMS) services. To facilitate the network launch Ericsson will also supply a range of services including business consulting, network design and installation. Mobitel is Sri Lanka’s leading cellular network operator with a customer base of over 115,000 at the end of 2002.
