Jamaica to award LD concessions on 12 March

28 Feb 2003

Jamaica’s public service regulator OUR has said that it has received 36 applications from 22 companies for long distance carrier licences ahead of tomorrow’s liberalisation of the nation’s telecoms market. The fixed line services market is currently dominated by Cable & Wireless Jamaica, which serves around 1.1 million local customers and shares the long-distance market with reseller Gotel Communications. Among the notable new applicants are the national electricity company Jamaica Public Service (JPSCo) and Reliant Enterprise Communications, a joint venture owned by the boss of Jamaican ISP Infochannel and former C&W executive Steve Twomey.
