More wireless licences for India?

25 Feb 2003

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to clash with the country’s mobile industry over its plans to issue more wireless licences. But the TRAI’s attempts to open up the market are set to be challenged by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) which claims there is already an ‘oversupply’ of concessions that has led to increasingly low tariffs for customers and an annual subscriber growth rate of 85%. The COAI reported 11.16 million mobile subscribers at the end of January 2003.
