Versatel appeals against UMTS decision

3 Feb 2003

Dutch telecoms operator Versatel has launched an appeal against the government’s UMTS licence auction in 2000. The firm claims that the process should be declared invalid as rival bidder O2 (then Telfort) was in violation of auction rules; O2 allegedly pressured Versatel to back out of the auction. Versatel consequently failed to acquire a 3G concession and as a result is appealing to a special court for trade and industry in The Hague.
