German incumbent Deutsche Telekom [NYSE: DT] has announced that it will launch third-generation (3G) mobile services in its home market in the third quarter of 2003. Initial coverage will encompass 200 towns and cities, well in excess of the 25% population coverage required by the regulator RegTP. Deutsche Telekom’s main rival, Vodafone D2, has indicated that it plans to launch in the second or third quarter. The proposed launch dates puts Germany ahead of most of Europe in the deployment of 3G. Only the UK and Italian markets should see services rolled out earlier. Hutchison has plans to launch in both markets in March 2003, followed closely by Vodafone in the UK and TIM in Italy.
