Brasil Telecom to launch mobile services

23 Jan 2003

Telecoms holding company Brasil Telecom Participaçoes [NYSE: BRP] has announced that it will launch mobile services in the second half of 2003 using the three PCS licences it won in auction last November. The launch follows Telecom’s confirmation that its fixed line subsidiary Brasil Telecom will meet the government’s goals for fixed line infrastructure build-out by the end of February. The company had previously stated that it would not be able to meet the deadline for completion of the goals, which are a pre-requisite for any telco looking to launch wireless services or expand fixed line operations. Telecom’s fixed line rivals Telemar and Telesp both completed their respective build-outs at the end of last year.
