‘Grey’ surfers drive broadband internet growth in US

The number of broadband internet access subscribers in the US grew by 59% in 2002 to 33.6 million according to Nielsen/NetRatings. At the same date 74.4 million customers accessed the internet through narrowband connections at speeds ranging from 14.4kbps-56kbps. Older internet users, aged between 55-64, were the fastest growing segment using broadband with almost three million users at the end of 2002, up 78% year-on-year. Broadband users averaged over 17 hours online per month, while the figure for dial-up users stood at less than ten hours.
